An Interview With Sophie Lane
Rewind 7 years, little Sophie Lane was one of the first kids I worked with. We had such a connection right from day 1 and shooting together just felt so natural - and not to mention fun. She was a total firecracker and always kept me on my toes.
Sophie and her family moved to Tauranga in mid 2018 and the last time I shot with her in Auckland was January 2019. We worked together again in an Auckland group shoot at the end of 2022 but I didn’t get much time to catch up with her properly. On my recent working roadtrip I finally made it down to Tauranga and was able to shoot with the almost 14-year-old Sophie. I had fun comparing Sophie’s new photos to others we had done when she was little. It’s crazy seeing the changes - in both my work and Sophie herself.
What do you enjoy the most about doing photoshoots?
I love trying to come up with new poses and exploring new locations. It’s always really fun wandering around with Rachel trying to find exciting backdrops for photos!
Do you have an all time favourite photoshoot that we did together?
The kind of Hiphop funky shoot with the graffiti wall is my favourite. We got in a car and raced around trying to find cool locations and ended up with this cool wall! Also the first fashion shoot I did with you down at the viaduct.
What has been the highlight of your dance journey this far?
Joining Space studios last year has been the hugest highlight of my dance journey. Being the youngest member of both ProTeam and Astra has given me so much confidence and I’m inspired by the other amazing dancers who all inspire me to be the best I can be.
Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?
Full time dance would be amazing! Probably in Aussie or perhaps even America!
How do you think you have changed/grown since when first met when you were little?
When I first started doing photoshoots with you, I was tiny and super confident. Now as a teen I’m definitely more conscious of how I look and what poses are going to look the best, but instead of just a leg mount or high kick I like to try to find feeling and more expressive movements that don’t necessarily show off my flexibility but show my maturity as a dancer.
